Dick is a graduate of the University of Colorado, in Boulder where he received a BSCE degree [with honors] in 1952.  After graduation he went to work for Morrison-Knudsen Construction Company, working as a project field engineer on the Littleton Dam on the Connecticut River in New Hampshire.  He took a hiatus from his engineering career in 1955, joining the FBI and serving as a special agent in Washington, D.C., Louisville, Kentucky, and New Orleans, Louisiana.  In 1960, Dick resumed his engineering career at Inland Steel Products where he rose to the position of National Director of Architecture and Engineering Services.  He left Inland Steel to form CDS, a firm that designed flexible space systems.

In 1976, Dick moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon to become an engineering instructor at Oregon Institute of Technology.  He remained at OIT until 2001, retiring as a Professor of Civil Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.   During his tenure at OIT, he founded Zbinden Engineering where he developed a consulting engineering practice, serving as the chief designer for numerous building structures, roads, highway, bridge, drainage and planning projects. Dick retired from active practice in 2003.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors for ZCS Engineering, Inc. as Vice President.

Dick served on the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying during the late 1990s.  During his tenure on the Board, he chaired the Evaluations and Qualification Committee, the Law Enforcement Committee, and served as a member of the Rules Committee.  He served as the Board President from 1999 through 2001.
